Sharr Medal Presentation 2011 (W.A.)

The Sharr Medal is awarded annually to a Western Australian librarian or library technician in their first year of employment who exhibits the most potential to make a significant contribution to the library profession in WA.

To celebrate Library & Information Week 2011, ALIAWest and the State Library
of Western Australia invite you to the presentation of the Sharr Medal and the inaugural Library Board of Western Australia Award for Excellence.

Thursday 26 May 2011
5:30pm for 6:00pm start
in the State Library Theatre.

The Guest Speaker is Mr Geoff Strempel, Associate Director, Public Library Services, State Library of South Australia. Geoff is responsible for providing services to South Australia’s 130+ public libraries and is a former Sharr medalist.

Careers Expo Steering Commitee Nominations W.A.

This year the W.A. New Graduates Group has taken the reins planning the ALIA booth at the Perth Careers, Education and Employment Expo 12th - 15th May 2011.

We are currently looking for volunteers who are passionate about their work in libraries to form the 2011 steering committee.

Volunteers should be able to commit to 2 face to face meetings of approximately 1 hour and enjoy working independently on tasks.

Ability to staff the booth during the expo and ALIA membership are desirable but not essential.

This is a perfect opportunity for Students and New Graduates to be involved in the promotion of libraries as well as gain experience working on a committee.

We’ve been making our list, checking it twice and arranging the contents for shopping ease and what have we realised?
That the W.A. New Graduates group End of Year Spectacular is next week! Woo Hoo!!!! And we have a massive line up of great things:

With the buzz of NLS5 abstract submissions opening we’ve roped in Vicky Carlyon, recent ALIA Access presenter, to give us some tips and tricks for submitting a successful abstract for a conference. We are also pleased to announce that Carol Newton Smith, ALIA Local Liaison for WA, will be joining us to share her insight and experience. And don’t forget my illustrious co-coordinator Gemma Lyon, a first time speaker at NLS4, will be there to share her experiences and to answer all your burning questions about its really like being a first time presenter.

Plus we also have heaps of great lightning talks lined up including:
• Delivering Information Literacy in remote indigenous communities
• Being a first time manager
• Mathias’ spotlight and many more!
