Mobrarians for Movember!

Well, that month is coming up... November, which is the month of remembering stuff on the 5th and the 11th. And the 6th... I think. And I'm sure there was something happening on the 10th. But ANYWAY, it's also the month of Movember, where people all over the world grow facial hair to raise money for mens issues, particularly prostate cancer and depression.

And so, we put the call out to all you guy-brarians out there. Become a Mobrarian! Join us! The more we have on board, the merrier!

Or if you're of the non-facial-hair-growing persuasion, then encourage your local guy-brarian to take part, and then support him! Or you can sponsor the Mobrarian Team with a donation! Every dollar counts!

Stay tuned, over at the Mobrarians Blog. and become a fan over at the Facebook Page. There will be progressive photos, and it could get quite ugly...

Meet Brenna From SA

A chance encounter with an inspiring history librarian as a 3rd year undergrad and a librarian family member ensured that Brenna became a librarian after finishing her BA. Libraries had always been an important part of her life, but it wasn’t until the “hey, I could do that” moment in the history library tutorial that she seriously entertained the possibility of becoming a librarian. Graduation from the BA and a Grad Dip in Information Studies followed…

Brenna now works as a Trainee Graduate Librarian at the University of Adelaide, in Research and Reference. This allows her to do loads of tours, training sessions and plenty of desk shifts. Previous jobs have included library officer at a music library and a public library, call centre at the ATO and lots of volunteer work. Brenna is currently studying for a Masters in Cultural Heritage at Deakin University, and between assignments loves to play her cello, sew, knit, crochet and generally make things.

Meet Rebecca from SA

Rebecca Whitehead shares the New Graduates Group Coordinator role with Brenna Cook in SA.

When Rebecca completed a BA in Multimedia Studies in 2004, she still harboured a childhood desire to become a Librarian, so she took the plunge and completed a Graduate Diploma in Information Studies. Rebecca is now working as a Trainee Graduate Librarian at the University of Adelaide, spending the last year and a half of this position as a Metadata Librarian.

Before Rebecca entered the wonderful world of libraries she worked for 3.5 years as an Information Officer at Flinders University where she was able to apply a lot of her information seeking skills, as well as honing her experience in web and desktop publishing. Rebecca is addicted to her Saturday morning spin class, loves the buzz she gets from teaching hands on training and thinks in her future life she might be a part-time Librarian/part-time wedding planner.

New grads at first, Adelaide

On a Wednesday in October a small but vibrant group of library peeps met at first to kick of the new grad scene in Adelaide. There were cocktails for some, plush velvet couches, chatter and did we mention the cocktails?

Thanks to those that came along and shared their thoughts on the Library world with us. The feedback we received about what you want was great. Keep an eye out for another social event to mark the end of 2010 (there may or may not be a Christmas theme) and more professional development events to come in 2011.

We look forward to working with you guys to reinvent the Adelaide new grad scene – because after all we can’t let those Eastern states have all the fun!

Malaysian Delights ~ Sydney

Walking up the steep steps of the beautifully decorated Malaysian restaurant it was hard to believe that years ago this restaurant used to be a Dick Smith electronics.

There was a good turn out on Friday night, with students and new graduates alike turning up for an evening filled with wonderful food, excellent discussions about what is important to them within this growing and changing profession as well as some discussions about interesting initiatives.

We are planning on having regular events and would like to see more involvement of other ALIA members and non members alike as a way of dispelling many great beliefs about our profession and at the same time advocating for what is most important to us all; the future of our profession.

Having said this, I think this event was just one of many great events to come. So get all your Syd peeps excited!

Till next time
