Creating an Awesome Proposal Workshop - Brisbane, August 4th

Are you ready to take the next step in your professional development and present at a conference?

The perfect opportunity has arrived! The sixth New Librarians' Symposium - NLS6 - is coming to Brisbane February 10 - 11, 2013. With mentoring available throughout the process, NLS6 is a great space for first-timers and experienced presenters alike. The call for proposals is out and ALIA New Graduates Group QLD is here to help you.

We welcome anyone interested in submitting a proposal for NLS6 as well as anyone curious about the general process of creating proposals for conferences or other professional submissions. Our facilitators will get you up to speed on the process including how to write for a theme. Bring the ideas you are working on  but don't worry if you haven't found your awesome idea yet. We'll get you started. This event is designed as a safe space to brainstorm and refine your ideas with experienced peers.

And there will be cupcakes!

When: Saturday, August 4th
Time: 2-4 pm
Where: State Library of Queensland (venue to be confirmed)
Cost: $5 (ALIA member), $7 (non-ALIA members)
Who: Anyone - newbies, old hands and you don't have to be a "librarian." The NLS6 theme is Think Different. Be Different. That means information professionals of all stripes are encouraged.

We’ve been making our list, checking it twice and arranging the contents for shopping ease and what have we realised?
That the W.A. New Graduates group End of Year Spectacular is next week! Woo Hoo!!!! And we have a massive line up of great things:

With the buzz of NLS5 abstract submissions opening we’ve roped in Vicky Carlyon, recent ALIA Access presenter, to give us some tips and tricks for submitting a successful abstract for a conference. We are also pleased to announce that Carol Newton Smith, ALIA Local Liaison for WA, will be joining us to share her insight and experience. And don’t forget my illustrious co-coordinator Gemma Lyon, a first time speaker at NLS4, will be there to share her experiences and to answer all your burning questions about its really like being a first time presenter.

Plus we also have heaps of great lightning talks lined up including:
• Delivering Information Literacy in remote indigenous communities
• Being a first time manager
• Mathias’ spotlight and many more!

Are you coming to ALIA Access? Roll Call!

Conferences are a great place for networking, but it can all be a little daunting if you're new on the "scene", especially as a new graduate.

So, here's a chance for you to let everybody else know that you're coming, and give them an excuse to come and find you and say "hi" at some point during the conference.

Also, don't forget that there will be New Graduate drinks on Wednesday 1st of September, at 6:30pm (after the Welcome Reception). We'll be gathering at the Plough Inn, which is only a short walk from the Convention Centre on South Bank. If you can, please RSVP here.

ALIA Access Update

It's lining up to be an exciting full day of papers and activities in the What Next! Information to Enhance the Career of New Graduates stream, with papers and assistance available for students, new graduates and not-so-new graduates! Check out the program for the full range of papers and the workshop that will be held on the day.

Students are reminded that they are eligible for a heavily reduced rate of only $400 (earlybird) for the whole conference, a great way to learn practical skills, hear about real-world experiences and network, network, network!

ALIA members with less than five years since graduation are reminded that the ALIA Board of Directors and the ALIA New Generation Advisory Committee are giving you the opportunity to attend ALIA Access for free, just fill out the application form that was sent out to the ALIAnewgrad elist and send it to enquiry@alia.org.au by Monday 21 June 2010. If you're not a member yet, get your membership in now and register!

Job seekers and those wanting to polish up their resume will have the chance to have their resumes reviewed by experienced library and information professionals in the relaxed surrounds of the on-site coffee shop.

And as for networking, networking, networking, in addition to those events that are part of the Access program, due to popular demand, the New Grads at the Pub event made so popular at NLS4 in Melbourne is being revived, with a special after-drinks dinner & drinks (self-funded) on the Wednesday evening at Brisbane's historic Plough Inn, only 5 minutes walk (600m) from the Convention Centre.

Fancy attending ALIA Access for free?

Earlybird registrations for ALIA Access close in just over a month. If you haven't checked out the program yet, you should head over to the Access site now, where you can follow the conference on Twitter, Facebook and make sure you hashtag conversations with #ALIAAccess.

As part of the ALIA Board of Directors commitment to provide opportunities for professional development to new graduate members of ALIA, they have approved the New Generation Advisory Committee’s (NGAC) request for a free registration for a new graduate to ALIA Access, running from 1-3 September 2010 in Brisbane. This opportunity is open to current Associate members of ALIA with five or less years since graduation.

The purpose of this offer is to enable a new graduate Associate ALIA member, who would not otherwise receive funding from their organisation, to attend the What Next! Practical Information to Enhance the Career of New Graduates stream of ALIA Access. On the second day of the conference program the winner can choose from the many stream options available.

Eligible applicants who wish to be considered for this offer should send a completed application form by the closing date (Monday 21 June 2010) to enquiry@alia.org.au . Please ensure you address all criteria as set out in the form.

All applications will be considered on merit. A panel made up of the Chair of NGAC, the convenor of the What Next! ALIA Access stream, ALIA Director: Member Services and an ALIA Board Director will make a decision regarding the winner of the ALIA Access registration.
