How To Address Selection Criteria Workshop

• · Do you know what addressing selection criteria mean and what the objective of doing so is?

If you answered yes to all of these, rest assured we are here to help! The ALIA New Grads Group in Tasmania will be holding a Selection Criteria Workshop for those struggling to make sense of it all!!

We are lucky to have Garry Conroy-Cooper, manager at Launceston LINC [LINC Tasmania www.linc.tas.gov.au] who has had extensive knowledge and experience in Australia wide recruitment in our industry and human resource management, to host this two-hour workshop. You will learn how to write effective responses to selection criteria, attract more interviews and communicate your skills effectively. Please bring along examples of criteria that you thought were difficult to address or were unsure how to approach, examples of the documents you wrote addressing selection criteria and we will discuss these at the workshop.

You do not need to be a student or a new graduate to come – EVERYONE is welcome!

A different partnership

In 2012, NLS6 will be aligned with ALIA’s Information Online conference to bring you an action-packed week of professional development in Brisbane.


A different approach

We know NLS is an important event on the new graduate professional development calendar. Over the past few months, ALIA has undertaken extensive consultation with ALIA members, groups, the ALIA New Generation Advisory Committee and the Information Online Program Committee. ALIA and the Board of Directors understand the needs of NLS delegates: NLS6 needs to be an affordable event with a strong focus on a high quality program.


A different model

With this in mind, the Board have endorsed a new model for NLS6. The 2013 Symposium will be organised by a committee of volunteers with support from ALIA National Office staff. Kate Davis of Queensland University of Technology has been appointed co-chair of the Organising Committee and she will be joined in the chairing role by Vanessa Warren of Macquarie University and current Chair of the New Generation Advisory Committee.


NLS6 will be an event in its own right – not a satellite of Information Online 2013 – but aligning the two events will allow them to complement each other in many ways. NLS6 delegates will be provided with free admission to the trade and exhibitions space at Online on Tuesday 12 February and have a unique opportunity to capitalise on the proximity of the two events to attend both with reduced travel costs.

If you’re interested in finding out how you can help with organising NLS6, Vanessa and Kate invite you to attend an online information session next Thursday 8 March at 6pm AEST (Brisbane – please convert for other regions). This session will be recorded for those who are interested in getting involved but unable to attend at this time. A call for expressions of interest in joining the Organising Committee will be announced at this online session. Please RSVP to k3.davis@qut.edu.au.

To all WA New Grads!

Kicking off the new year in QLD with Resume Reviews!

New year, fresh start. Perhaps you’ve just graduated? Looking for your first library job? Due to take the next step in your career? Or new to the profession? Time to get out that resume...... and take this fabulous opportunity for advice and feedback on your resume from an experienced library and information professional.

Right now, it's 'go for launch' for the new year. Kelly Johnson and I, your ALIA New Graduates Group for Queensland, are so keen to get this year rockin' for new graduates and students, we're kicking it off with a Resume Reviews event. So we can make the event more accessible and convenient, TWO Resume Reviews sessions will be run at the same time - one on the Gold Coast and one in Brisbane.

Where: Brisbane - State Library Cafe, Southbank. Gold Coast - TBA.

When: Saturday, 18th February from 10am.

Cost: ALIA members - $5.00, non-ALIA members $7.00

Here’s what you do: -

1. Submit your RSVP with your location preference and resume to me via email (acrystelle@gmail.com) by Saturday, 11th February.
2. Receive your appointment time.
3. Meet with your reviewer at your appointed time and receive valuable feedback and advice!
4. Apply feedback and have more confidence in your resume.

Appointments will run for approximately 20 minutes each.

Last year’s Resume Reviews event was such a success, it was fantastic to see an exchange of enthusiasm between reviewers and participants.

Library Camp Australia 2012, Melbourne: 10th Feb 2012

Registrations are now open for Library Camp Australia

What is Library Camp?
Library Camp is an excellent free professional development opportunity; an unconference for anyone who works in, researches, uses or is interested in libraries. Attendees from a range of backgrounds, library types and experience levels are welcome.
Unconference session topics are decided on the day by everyone. Library Camp provides the opportunity to be an active participant in discussions and for participants to be challenged and stimulated. There is no audience - unconferences are interactive!

Nervous about participating? Don't worry, no one will force you to do PowerPoint karaoke, but we will all be supportive if you do! Your contribution is valued whether you are contributing to discussion, chairing a session or cleaning up at the end of the day.

Where is Library Camp?
University of Melbourne has kindly offered to host Library Camp, it will be held at the Parkville Campus and is easily accessible by public transport, but parking will be available (more details on the Library Camp website).


When is Library Camp?
Friday 10 February 2012, from 9:30 to 4:30.
We have timed LibraryCamp Australia to be directly after the VALA2012 Conference in order to attract interstate and international guests but also so that people who are unable to attend VALA can gain the benefit of networking and collaborating with VALA delegates and feed off that conference buzz.

How much will it cost?
