HOBART: Interview Techniques Workshop

Gain an insight into the Interview Techniques required to access the 3 biggest employment sectors for librarians in the state:


Public Libraries: From LINC Tasmania, we have Jane McGregor who has over 23 years experience in the area of Library and Information Services, working in areas such as Technical Services, Systems, Collection Development, Reference and Client Services in both public and academic libraries in Tasmania. Jane is a qualified Library Technician and Librarian and a member of ALIA. Interests include client’s needs, recruitment and use of new technologies to enhance service delivery.


School Libraries: From Hutchins School, we have Jill Abell who has a background in teacher librarianship, systems and software project management.  She has worked in government schools, colleges and curriculum and ICT consultancies prior to the current appointment. Interested in the effective implementation of educational change, Jill’s strategic ICT planning goal has been to enable a high performance learning organisation with fast, secure and reliable communications.  She is a member of the library associations and takes an equally active role in the professional learning communities of national educational associations.


University Libraries: From UTAS, we have Christine Evans who, for over a 20 year career to-date, has worked in public libraries, special libraries and higher education libraries in the north and south of Tasmania.  Since 2004, Chris has been Science Librarian at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). In addition to managing the branch library, this position includes the role of a Liaison Librarian and the provision of Library-wide leadership to colleagues in their support of UTAS researchers. 


Initially, a short session on Selection Criteria will be covered with the main subject of Interview Techniques to follow.


This will be the most comprehensive information and interactive session yet held for the New Grads Group (Tas) and will run for a period of 4 hours.

Shape the NLS6 program! Have your say on keynote topics and speakers

The Sixth New Librarians Symposium (NLS6) is taking place in Brisbane before Information Online on the 10th and 11th of February 2013. It might seem far away but the wheels are turning to make this the best ever NLS. This is an event for you: aimed at students and recent (or not so recent) graduates of the information industry (not just Librarians!).

One of the very first tasks for the NLS6 Organising Committee is locking in a range of awesome keynote speakers.

But in keeping with our Be different theme, we want to take a different approach to selecting speakers for keynote presentations and participants for panels.

This time round, we want you guys – the delegates-to-be – to tell us what you want to hear about and who you want to hear from.

We encourage you to think differently:

• Think beyond the L in LIS. What’s happening in the broader information profession?
• Think beyond the obvious three. It’s not just about academic, public and special libraries. Who inspires you in school libraries? Research libraries? Non-traditional library roles?
• Think beyond a lecture. Our ‘keynote’ sessions don’t have to be traditional keynotes. Want to hear different people on the same topic? Suggest a panel, debate, or round of lightening talk keynotes.

You can suggest topics or people – we’re open to both.

Although we can’t promise stacks of big names from overseas, don’t limit your thinking at this point. As well as having people present in person at NLS6, we’re open to bringing some keynote presenters in virtually.

Join ALIA VIC committee members to celebrate Library and Information Week 2012 and hear first hand from VIP guests---including Sue Roberts, State Library of Victoria CEO and State Librarian---what they see as the critical issues facing their sector now and into the future.

Come and join us for dinner in Melbourne, 16 May 2012

The library students from Charles Sturt University are coming to Melbourne for a study visit. The ALIA Victorian New Graduates Group is hosting an informal dinner to help them feel welcome, and we'd love you to come!

If you're a local library student, a new librarian or you work in the industry and just want to meet people and have fun, come along and join us for an exciting night in the heart of Melbourne. This is a great chance to make friends in the community, mix with other students and learn about the industry from colleagues working in a range of different libraries.

April's Library folk at the Comedy Festival

This month our popular Library folk event is taking a slight detour.

Instead of gathering around for dinner and drinks, we are going to tickle our funny bone. Thats right the International Comedy Festival is in Melbourne again for short time only, so come along and hang with your Library friends for what will a good night if not the best night for 2012 so far.

NLS Organising Committee - Call for EOI now open!

Interested in helping organise a spectacular New Librarians' Symposium? Expressions of Interest for joining the NLS6 Organising Committee are now open!

We are looking for motivated, creative and collaborative people to provide leadership and support in the following areas:

- Sponsorship
- Marketing
- Website
- Experience (tours, workshops, travel and social coordination)
- Proposals and speaker liaison
- Volunteers

Not sure about joining the Organising Committee in a leadership role? We're also looking for people to participate in sub-committees in each area.

You don't need to live in Brisbane to be part of this virtual committee, but you do need to be an ALIA personal member, and have an interest in the issues and experiences of new graduates in the library and information industry. You also need to be a little bit awesome!
